Working in stone, I infuse my work with my love of the dance and the beauty of nature. All existence is in motion and my creations are an attempt to capture the energy of a moment in time. Somehow carving one of the hardest mediums gives me a greater sense of freedom than drawing, painting and sculpting with more pliable materials ever has.

John Lafortune is a native of Alberta, Canada and has been carving for about 8 years now. He works from his home studio in Sherwood Park, Sculpting from Alabaster, Granite, Basalt, Marble and Onyx. John started carving during his recovery from a serious accident that cut short his career in the Landscape Design and Construction Industry, and although it was to be solely therapeutic, he discovered not only a rare gift for working with stone, but a deep love of the work.

I have been sculpting stone for about ten years. I've mostly worked with marble, alabaster, soapstone and agate. I've also worked with pipestone, ivory, jade, quartz, lapis lazuli, amber, sodalite, azurite and others. I do representational and abstract sculpture. So far, all of my sculptures have been under 100lbs. However, I plan to start doing some larger pieces soon. I use various rasps, chisels and diamond files. I also use a foredom. I recently purchased an industrial air compressor; die grinders, waterfeed angle grinder, air hammer, ect.

Ferenc Gregor is a self taught sculptor/carver. Having completed hundreds of works in marble, granite, limestone, and other natural stone and various medium for commercial, goverment, and private collections. Currently accepting comissions, exhibiting works, giving workshop instruction, and demonstrations. Figurative sculpture and relief in high detail as a preference. “There must be recognized, a relationship. As with all relationships, one of commitment, understanding, respect and patience. These, ”materials”, are not merely inanimate objects. They are from the sacred earth. Living, growing, and changing constantly on a level far beyond our comprehension. Therefore, we must learn not to oppose and force them to our desire, but learn from them what is required by us to guide that relationship to the desired result.”

For me it's the ultimate challenge to create original and unique artwork out of a block of stone. It's some kind of magic how every piece of rock contains its own "biggest possible" sculpture inside, you 'just' have to remove the rest of the stone which you don't need for your sculpture! I make abstract and figurative sculptures out of Belgian and Irish blue stone, French limestone, marble, black hard stone like 'Noir de Mazy' and basalt. I start sculpting directly without any models or drawings, I uses only the 'taille-directe' method. I have made some female nudes, flowers, garden statues, a celtic inspired relief, trible heads, abstracts, fantasy creatures like a dragon. I've just finished a fish sculptured in lime stone: 'Marine life on shore'
Location: Belgium (Zottegem Velzeke).

Stone Art - Handcrafted by Ruth Killoran. I carve mainly in Oamaru stone, producing original, well finished sculptures. I like to experiment with other New Zealand stone, Mt Somers is one of my favourites but is harder to find. It has a wonderful fine texture which sands to a wonderful finish. I live in Christchurch NZ and I'm inspired by the fantastic surroundings that are on our doorstep. When starting a new piece I'm totally carried away with the excitment of it. I usually sketch my ideas first and then carefully pick the stone to suit. I lose myself in the work and find the process totally absorbing. I like to be led by the stone and follow it's different textures. You can never be quite sure what the end result is going to look like! I love that unpredictability. I find commission work the most satisfying and get very attached to each sculpture I do. Each sculpture is unique and literally a piece of New Zealand. Please take a look at the gallery and works for sale on my website www.stonegrooves.co.nz or contact me... email- stonegrooves@xtra.co.nz phone 03 331 8451, 19 Heybridge Lane, St Martins, Christchurch

Abstract, modernist stone sculpture. Jeff's sculpture focuses on portraying a unique interplay between rigorous geometry and fluid movement. The inherent and essential tension which exists between geometric and organic form drives his carving style. These sculptures begin with a foundational concept which initially directs the piece, from which point they are resolved mostly from decisions made in the moment.

Ronald Rae is based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is a direct carver of granite. He has been carving granite by hand for over forty years. The stone he uses comes from Aberdeenshire and is approximately 460 million years old. He feels it is a privilege to be able to carve such an ancient and noble stone. Ronald's sculptures express his love and concern for the human and animal condition. His largest sculpture to date is a twenty tonne Lion. At present the Lion is on exhibition in Holyrood Park Edinburgh where 20 of his sculptures were on display for eighteen months before moving to The Falkirk Wheel in Central Scotland till Spring 2009. The sculptures are mainly of animals, some of endangered species e.g. the 22 feet long Tyger Tyger. See also there his Heavy Horse and Foal. At the end of the exhibition the sculptures will be for sale. Several of Ronald Rae's sculptures are in public and private collections in the UK and abroad. His latest work is a ten tonne granite sculpture of Three Elephants. Ronald Rae is willing to travel to give illustrated talks about his work.

My stone carving is a process of removal, deconstruction and discovery. I carve granite, limestone, marble and numerous other stones. As a sculptor I explore variations in structural transformation and the compelling tactile geometries of organically complex planes and surfaces, Working with both abstract and representational imagery my large scale public art commissions can be found throughout Canada and Northern United States. My smaller scale pieces display the wealth of possibilities inherent in the poetics of surface and form.
