what is Cherokee
Hi Robin,
Cherokee is one of the trade names Georgia marble has for a
predominately greyish-white with dark cloudy veining. Like other
Georgia marbles quarried near Tate in north Georgia (Etowah Pink,
White Statuary, Solar Gray, Mezzotint and Creole are some other trade
names for other varieties), Cherokee has a fairly large crystalline
structure -- if Colorado Yule is like powdered sugar then Georgia is
more like rock salt in terms of grain size.
At life-size detail can be worked into figurative (or abstract) forms
nicely, but the crystal-size makes smaller scale works tricky in
Georgia marble. However, the crystalline structure is very tight and
Georgia marble is considered to be one of the best choices of true
marbles for withstanding outdoor weathering (very low porosity, and a
medium hard marble).

Good Carving to You,
