Clive ... if the sculpture is exposed to rain then no matter how successful the barrier the splash will transfer iron oxide. The cold gal idea would thus be subverted. This is a question I have given some consideration...boxcars are made of cor-ten and painted, as are bridge beams. Why paint? This prevents the self-limiting oxide forming...is it that when the paint fails a self-limiting oxide forms?
If you can prevent rain from splashing the marble sculpture then you would not need a barrier.
