I would consider coating both the steel plinth and the contact area of
the marble with polyurethane or other clear-coat material. Enamel
paint might also be an option if it would not be noticed (depending on
the placement of these plinths). =20

The other possibility would be to create a sacrificial anode- that would
entail burying a piece of zinc in the ground next to or under the steel,
with a small wire keeping the two metals in electrical contact. The
zinc is lower on the galvanic corrosion series than steel or iron, and
will break down preferentially. This means that the steel will never
rust until all the zinc has dissolved. The duration of your rust
protection will depend on the size of the zinc anode. This is the same
technique used to prevent car frames, boats, and any other important
metal structures from corroding.
