Hi Don, as always you are wise and knowledgeble.
I have read the Bracussi quotes and it is true, each material behaves
different and there is so much one can ask from a given material.. I have
seen some people who stretch the qualities of materials making them do
things I never thought possible.
I remember using plaster and loving more the take away method than adding
and that is
what took me to stone. I will do clay because I want to master form and as
you siad- gesture. If one masters the basics then we can do almost anything
and gesture in any material in sculpture is the essence of the creative
process. The
gsture as you said gives emotion and that gives life to the sculpture. I
have seen that emotion in sculpture in many materials and when I saw it in
metal I was mesmerized, I guess it is because I am afraid of metals and
fire.....The emotion
of the gesture is for me different than the emotion from the nude
(realistic) , very different...one is passion and recognition ( it is
intoxicating in a very good way) and the other is amazement.
About a model when sculpting stone...why not? a little for the gesture, then
we work on the stone and then the model again for the details.....depending
on the posture it may be torture, but I would love it...didnt Michaelangelo
use live models? and it was so much fun for him.. Besides when we sculpt we
need to rest too, no?
The energy generated between artist and model becomes fuel for the creation
of art. That is what I experienced. I guess I like the idea of live
models.......experience first hand forms and texture and then try to
recreate it......one day.......
Thanks for you input Don, I always enjoy them.
