Sealing Marble
----- Original Message -----
Quoted text begins.From: "Hap Hagood"
A church in my area was recently given a 3 foot tall, TN
pink marble madonna that they plan to place outside
permanently. Should this sculpture be sealed beforehand? If
so, with what? To prevent theft, they also plan to mount it
on a small concrete slab with two pieces of rebar set in the
concrete. This will require the drilling of two holes into
the base of the sculpture. What is the recommended procedure
for drilling holes in marble?
End of quote.
Hello Hap.
Please do not use rebar as mounting pins. Iron will rust,
expand, and possibly damage the sculpture. Stainless steel is
what you want to get. Use a good two part epoxy as the
adhesive. Several name brands are available through outfits
like Bicknell, Gran Quartz, Granite City Tool etc. Tn pink is a
pretty dense stone, so I'm not sure it will take in a "sealer".
You might want to check with the people at Tennesse Marble as to
what their recomendation is: Try this email address.
