Portland Stone
Hi
I am a painter and new to stonecarving. Last year I
attended the stonecarving course at Tout Quarry,
Portland Island. As a result of this inspiring course
with Mike Chapman, I have built a workshop in my garden
and I'm finishing the piece I started last summer.
Hannah, we are comimg back this summer - sorry I haven't
sent you the photographs yet - I'm working at a slow
pace and enjoying the challenges that arise each time I
step into the studio! Bob is still finising the toes on
his lizard too!
Can anybody out there give me some advice about getting
a fine, smooth finish on Portland Stone? I want to
contrast the rough-hewn textures on a figurative piece
with very smooth, fine detail. I am using files and
riffles and thought that fine wire wool may help plus
wet and dry? Are there any other techniques? There is a
fair amount of Roach in the stone which makes for
interesting contrasts in surface textures!
